AV62 Architects will return to the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, representing Catalonia for the second time.

Under the direction of Rem Koolhaas in this years exposition, AV62 will participate in the Collateral Event Arquitectures Empeltades / Grafting Architecture, curated by Josep Torrents i Alegre.

The proposal seeks to elucidate the changes taking place in contemporary Catalan architecture by highlighting processes in which “living traditions” are being updated as new. Just as grafting can permanently unite two trees, pre existing structures can be modernized, or grafted, with a new proposal that generates a building that is both contemporary and recognizable. This idea of“grafted architecture” can be identified across many centuries. According to curator for the Catalonian pavilion, Josep Torrents i Alegre had this to say: “ It is in the last quarter of the 20th century and the early 21st century where we find a great number of projects in Catalan architecture in which proposals of different types and scales achieve brilliant results.”

AV62 will present its first prize proposal in the international competition to Revive and Develop the Adhamiyah District, organized by the City of Baghdad. It has been selected among twelve projects in Catalonia, through which the various ways of approaching different problems can be traced.
